Help Wanted:

The ECA is seeking volunteers interested in helping us to clean the smoke damage from the interior walls, floors and ceilings of the Historic Dansbury Depot in order to prepare the station for interior renovations. No experience necessary, just a willingness to put in some hard work and invest some old-fashioned energy and elbow grease into a very important historic preservation project in your community! Please email us (eastburginfo@gmail.com) with your name, contact information and availability if you are interested! Also please note any construction experience in your email, as we are seeking team leaders for this task. Feel free to pass this message along to other sites or organizations you feel may be interested; the more volunteers we get, the sooner the station's rehabilitation and adaptive reuse will be completed and her doors re-opened to residents and visitors. Thanks!

The Eastburg Community Alliance (ECA) is pleased to announce receipt of a $100,000.000 grant award from the R. Dale and Frances M. Hughes Foundation in support of its Dansbury Depot Preservation Project. Given the history of Hughes Printing and the legacy of the Hughes family in this community the ECA is honored to have the R. Dale and Frances M. Hughes Foundation’s support and partnership in this meaningful historic preservation and economic generating rehabilitation and adaptive re-use project. This grant award will support interior rehabilitation work on the 1864 East Stroudsburg Railroad Station according to strict historic preservation guidelines.

7.4.11

The ECA is keeping to our one year promise and will open the Depot to the public for our October 15th re-dedication ceremony. The Station's Museum and Coffee Shop may not be fully developed at that time, but we anticipate the full exterior and interior rehabilitated will be complete and the station accessible for our re-dedication on October 15th! Save the date!

.

With the corner of the municipal parking lot the ECA disrupted in relocating the depot now graded, paved and relined, our contractual site work on the depot is now complete! At present, windows of the same 19th century era style and materials of the surviving sections of the station are currently being hand-crafted off-site by skilled artisan Harley Fish (both Sr. and Jr. are on the job and ironically also built the wood bar that once stood in the dansbury depot restaurant). Building these windows from scratch with authentic materials and historic style will take close to a month to complete. Replicated historic siding is being hand forged as well, which will also take several weeks. So although there will appear to be a lull in the action for the next few weeks on site, much progress is taking place off-site behind the scenes and we believe its worth the time to do things right and remain authentic and true to this station's history. Once the windows and siding are complete all will be installed onto the station and she will be given a fresh coat (or three) of paint). The ECA continues to move forward with great enthusiasm and excitement and is so pleased to be working with such skilled local artisans and such a supportive and positive community. Look for more updates as we forge ahead with this exciting historic preservation project in East Stroudsburg!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.25.11

After weeks of site work, the station is now firmly rooted in her new home! Site work through this past week has allowed us to remove the construction barriers and plant soil stabilizing grass. Windows have been measured for the rehabilitated section of the station and are being hand-crafted to match the historic windows that have survived through the century.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.19.11

The Handicap accessible walkway to the front entrance of the depot is now complete, as are the sidewalks and some additional site grading.

Thank you to all the artists, poets, authors, and volunteers who came together to make Books, Brushes and Blooms a success! In addition to funds raised through vending fees the Exchange Club, the Association of University Women and Strauser's Nature's Helpers all came through with fundraising for the depot by donating the full proceeds from their books, food and plant sales to the cause! Thank you for your time, work, and support! Several hundred dollars were raised for the Dansbury Depot's rehabilitation through these efforts and the community was joined together in a great event promoting Arts, Music and Literature in the Poconos!

This station has brought people together for over 100 years and with everyone's continued support, will continue to into the future!

DANSBURY DEPOT MOVED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!

Wolf House and Building Movers and local construction support returned to East Stroudsburg today to prepare the Dansbury Depot Station for its second and final move. And although the move was originally scheduled to take place tomorrow, Friday, December 10th, Wolfe's dedicated work team was able to successfully rotate and complete the move all in one day. The Eastburg Community Alliance (ECA) is extremely pleased with the relocation and is eager to begin building the foundation and crawl space from the ground up, below the currently elevated station. Now that the station is safely relocated to its new home, ECA's next phase will include the complete reconstruction of the large section claimed by last October's fire as well as full redevelopment of the station's exterior. Interior redevelopment will follow. The ECA ambitiously aspires for the station's completion and opening in as little as 12 months. Once rehabilitated, the Dansbury Depot will serve the community as a living museum, housing art and artifacts relevant to the local history of both the Railroad and East Stroudsburg. It will also house a small coffee shop and serve as the new home and headquarters of the ECA, who owns the station and will administer its new use. The ECA plans to host numerous events and community engagements in and around the station to help feed the economic and cultural needs of East Stroudsburg and its surrounding region. In addition, the Dansbury Depot will once again greet visitors and serve railroad passengers from time to time as the ECA is coordinating several seasonal excursion train stops to and from the Steamtown National Park in Scranton.

Visit ECA's Official Facebook page for more photos of the rotation and move!

Preserving Eastburg's Heritage and Local History

"The mission of The Eastburg Community Alliance is to advance the sense of place, quality of life, and economic vitality of Downtown East Stroudsburg. Relocating and sustaining the Historic Dansbury Depot is vital to this mission." Cheryl Hayne, ECA Downtown Manager

The East Stroudsburg Railroad Station, known to the community as the Dansbury Depot, was built in 1864 and is listed on both the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places as well as the National  Registrar of Historic Places. This building helped to define the history and evolution of this community and was a driving force behind the development of this region.

Be a part of history by helping to preserve and honor Eastburg's past

The East Stroudsburg Railroad Station played an integral role in the development of East Stroudsburg as well as Monroe County and the greater Pocono Region. Many residents can trace their families' histories to the trains that moved them and their ancestors to and from the Poconos out of the East Stroudsburg Station. This station has not only defined the growth and development of our region; it has defined the lives of thousands of past and present residents. The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and father of the station restoration movement once said, "…station restoration is more than simply a tribute to our past; it is also an investment in our future". It is usually a linchpin to development and the beginning of our contribution to the revitalization of the downtown. It is also an impetus for economic growth and aesthetically and economically benefits the community and surrounding region.

The ECA is dedicated to the successful relocation and rehabilitation of the Dansbury Depot.

Proper rehabilitation, promotion and adaptive reuse of the Dansbury Depot will feed existing and future downtown businesses and help in the revitalization our downtown. But perhaps more important to our community, restoring the Dansbury Depot will support Eastburg’s unique sense of place and vital link’s to history that we wish to pass on to future generations.

How you can help

ECA cannot do this alone. Not only will this project require time and great effort from all, it will require significant financial contribution from the community.

Estimates for the entire project, including relocation, complete exterior and interior restoration and future programming range from $800,000 to well over a million dollars.

Right now financial contributions are key! Corporate donations, individual gifts, and in-kind donations are desperately needed in order to make this vision a reality.

If you wish to make a financial donation to this project, please mail or hand deliver your check to:

Eastburg Community Alliance

1 Washington Street

East Stroudsburg, PA 18301

Checks should be written out to Eastburg Community Alliance.

Please indicate that this donation is for the East Stroudsburg Station Preservation Project.

*ECA is recognized by the IRS as 501c3 Non-Profit Organization. All donations are Tax Deductible.  ECA's Federal Tax ID is 600000879.

If you are unable to make a monetary contribution to help fund the station's preservation, please make an in-kind donation of services to help in the ECA's efforts.

If you are a licensed builder/contractor, skilled craftsman, roofer, welder, electrician, plumber, painter, landscape architect, and everything in-between, please give a donation of your time. ECA will also need volunteers for office assistance and fundraising support. Be it a 500 hour pledge or as much help as you can offer, please share your skills with this meaningful project. The Story of the East Stroudsburg Railroad Station

While popularly referred to as the Dansbury Depot in reference to the name of the popular family restaurant that this station housed from 1982-2009, the Depot is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places under its original name, the East Stroudsburg Railroad Station. It's the integrity and history of this station, that the ECA seeks to preserve.

The East Stroudsburg Railroad station was created as the station stop for Stroudsburg when the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad first laid tracks through Monroe County in 1856. The Station was across the Brodhead Creek, and a good distance from the center of Stroudsburg, but the DL&W received the right-of-way for their tracks from Robert Brown, a prominent settler living on the east side of the Brodhead Creek. The presence of a railroad station soon stimulated commercial growth in its immediate vicinity and the area became a thriving community in its own right. The Borough of East Stroudsburg was incorporated as a separate town in 1870, the second incorporated borough in Monroe County. Yet until 1904, the DL&W railroad stop in East Stroudsburg was known as the Stroudsburg Station.

The original train station, built in 1865 actually stood 200 yards of the present station on the site now occupied by the Municipal Building. This station quickly became outmoded, and a new building was constructed in 1864. The larger station also boasted a fountain and flower beds, which would continue to surround the train station into the early 20th century.

Monroe County's tourist trade first flourished in the second half of the 19th century. Thousands of summer visitors arrived by train from New York and Philadelphia, and were met at the station by the horse and wagon of each of a many guest houses, boarding houses, and hotels in the area. The number of tourists increased yearly and the railroad expanded the station in 1883 to handle the traffic. The station at East Stroudsburg was one of two major stations in Monroe County, hence it boasted a larger and more complete facility than many other stops on the route between New York and Pocono Resorts. The station was again remodeled in 1915. At this tim e colored glass windows were added to the waiting room area and minor alterations and cosmetic repairs took place, but the station and freight office remained unaltered.

Tourism by train fell off sharply after the first World War, and the accompanying social and technological changes. The East Stroudsburg Station remains as it was in the early 20th century.

From 1901-1929, the East Stroudburg Railroad Station also served as the terminus to a local railroad line-the Delaware Valley Railroad. This line offered passenger and freight service from East Stroudsburg to Bushkill, stopping at many of the small villages in the Delaware River Vallley.

Passenger service declined through the 1950's and 1960's and in 1971 the station was closed and all the train service through Monroe County halted. The Building remained vacated but intact and sat empty for a decade. It was described on the National registrar as "deterioriating...but one of the few remaining structures of the 19th century buildings in the core area of town. At this time, April, 1980, citizens and local government expressed concern for the buildings restoration and future preservation.

At this time the interior was completely demolished to make room for a commercial enterprise which promised to breathe new life into the downtown and successfully adapt the historic structure to a viable new use in the community. The Dansbury Depot Restaurant would be the adaptation that emerged from the abandoned East Stroudsburg Railroad Station.

Converted into the Dansbury Depot Restaurant, a popular family restaurant and tourist destination, which played homage to the railroad station’s past significance to both town and region, the Dansbury Depot unquestionably fueled economic growth and job creation in the downtown. In addition to serving as a major economic generator for downtown businesses, the Dansbury Depot represented a significant part of East Stroudsburg’s local history and heritage, offering a ‘sense of place’ and quality of life contributions to the community.

Suffering severe structural damage from an accidental kitchen fire in October of 2009, left the once vibrant downtown establishment vacated and blighted once more. In the absence of this vital anchor building, commercial and tourist activity dropped off significantly in East Stroudsburg’s downtown. Local Business owners on Crystal Street reported sizable losses in terms of consumer volume and sales figures following the loss of the Dansbury Depot from the Crystal Street family. Additionally, quality of life components suffered by measurable increases in crime and delinquency surrounding the abandoned structure and darkened streetscape.

History often repeats itself. As citizens and local government expressed concern for the East Stroudsburg Railroad Station's restoration and future preservation over 2 decades ago, past and present residents, some the children and grandchildren of past Station users and advocates, stood up for this great station once more.

Today we find ourselves at yet another crossroad in history. As in the Station's past, technological and social changes have rendered the need for new social and economic uses for a once vital transportation node and economic generator. A tragic fire and consequent proposed demolition expedited an awakened citizenry and inspired organizational and governmental action in Eastburg once more. It's clear that Eastburg is not ready to see its beloved station go.

With the ECA's leadership, borough and the developer's coordination and tremendous financial and spiritual support from the community, the East Stroudsburg Railroad station may live to see yet another chapter in its history. Together we can write this chapter.

On October 15th, 2010, the Dansbury Depot narrowly escaped demolition when the Eastburg Community Alliance successfully negotiated its salvation by means of relocation.

Today the station has a survived not only a devastating fire but also two movements; one to its temporary location and the second, and final, to its new home across the railroad tracks where it rests safely upon its new foundation and is currently undergoing exterior securing. However, in order for complete rehabilitation to take place and for the station to once again resume its place in history, we need this community’s full support. We’ve taken it to a safe place, away from threat of demolition and now we seek widespread support to begin its next chapter.

Please support the East Stroudsburg Station Preservation Project anyway that you can.
